Todays Lesson 22/09/10-
Today we found out about Firth's 3 typoligies for music videos, this being; Performance, Narrative and Conceptual. We looked at various videos reffering to each type. Performance based videos remind viewers that the music is still important today, which puts the focus on the band and the actual music, used mostly by rock artists. Whereas Narrative videos put the focus on a linear story, with a cause-effect sequence. Alot of pop videos are narrative based with the same cliche storyline of 'boy meets girl'. The conceptual videos are primarily metaphors, these don't tell stories in a linear fashion. The video has more of a feeling when viewed rather than a story/ performance to be understood. Alot of music videos are a bit of all three, or atleast two. We think our music video will be abit of all three as we plan to have a band playing, which shows the performance element, we plan to have a narrative but with a slight twist which adds the conceptual aspects into the mix.

This is the video for the song Cheap and Cheerful by The Kills. I chose this video to demonstrate a conceptual music video as it uses lots of effects and props randomly without following a narrative. There is also a performance element in it as we see the guitarist of the band, Jamie Hince, banging a drum and the singer, Alison Mosshart singing.
In our own video for This House is a Circus, we will have a conceptual element where the character the audience will follow, starts seeing people as circus creatures and clowns which isnt a straight foreward interuptation of the lyrics.

This is an example of a performance music video as we see the Arctic monkeys perform on stage their first hit "I bet that you look good on the dancefloor".

This is one of Gaga's greatest and longest videos at almost ten minutes long and is a great example of a narrative video as it has a strong storyline.
